God is in Full Control Story
One day in January of 1974, I was driving home from work with no thought in my mind except wanting to be home. After leaving the freeway and turning on the road that would lead me home, a sudden thought came into my mind. It scared me as the message was that someone in my family was going to die.
Only God is in full control of everything, my story continues. My first thought was of my mother-in-law who had been ill with heart trouble, cancer and stroke. Her name was erased from my mind like an eraser cleans a blackboard. The next name that I thought of was my husband Orville. He had heart disease and had a heart attack recently. His name was erased also. I was then told the death would be the result of a car accident. Then I thought, "No, not one of my children". I started with the name of my oldest son. He had a band back then and traveled a lot. His name was erased. Next was my oldest daughter. She was married, had children and drove to work. Then her name was erased. Next in line was my second son, Douglas. He was 15 and in high school. He took the bus to school and didn't drive so I expected his name to be erased also. It was not. My heart sank. God is in full control and sending me a message. Douglas was going to be 16 in June of 1974 and would certainly want to get a driver's license to drive. I started thinking of ways to not make this happen.
It scared me as the message was that someone in the family was going to die.
In this one mile trip from the freeway to my home I gave all this some serious thought. I know!!! We would be sure not to let him get a car until he could pay for his insurance. Since he was still in high school and not working, this is how I could control the situation.
I thought this blackboard of my mind was a warning from God, and now that I had heeded the warning everything would be okay. As I drove into the driveway, I thanked God for the warning and went into the house feeling secure.
On March 27th, 1974 both Orville and I were at our jobs when each of us was called and told that Douglas had been in an accident. Orville worked in Bellevue and I in Seattle. He came to pick me up so we could go together and I had my car pool rider take my car home.
When we reached the police station in Everett, we asked to speak to "Officer Phillips" as we had been told to do. The lady said there was no"Officer Phillips", and that the only one with that name was the coroner. We both almost collapsed and an officer took us across the street to the coroner's office. Douglas did die in the car crash. He was a passenger in a car that went out of control at a high speed and smashed against a utility pole. He died instantly of acute, severe brain injuries.
The message I received from God that day in January was not a warning for me to take control and change something to prevent Douglas's Death, but He was preparing me for it. God is in full control and if we listen we can hear Him. We often think we can control our lives by following what we think are the best plans for us, and we are not consciously aware that we are merely human. Only God is in full control of our lives.
Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
don't try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God's voice in everything you do,
everywhere you go;
He's the one who will keep you on track.
